Grocery Tips to stay under $150 a week

Weekly shop for less than $150? I’ve gone from spending $15,000 a year on groceries to $7,500. You can too!⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👉🏼 The first thing you should do is print your bank statement and add up how much money you’re spending at the supermarket each month. I thought I was spending $200 a week but after adding it up it averaged out over $300 a week. 😱 Gave me the kick I needed to change things.

👉🏼Decide on what your budget is for groceries and stick to it!⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Do your groceries online. It’s the only way to avoid impulse buys. Have both Coles and Woolworths open and compare the prices. I spend no more than $100 between both stores and the remainder of my budget is spent at the local green grocer. If I go over my set amount I go back to my cart and decide what can wait for another week.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Do a pantry and freezer stocktake. Don’t just look, write it down so you can reference back to it. You don’t need tinned tomatoes for the 37th week in a row. Eat from your reserves. If you’re anything like me you’ve probably got enough canned goods and frozen mince to survive 42 years. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Try home brand! All my household staples are home brand. This includes toilet paper, nappies and all cleaning products.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Pay attention to unit pricing. Both websites allow you to sort via unit pricing. You’ll be surprised at the difference in price for most products. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Shop specials. If what I need is not on special we go without until it is. Some weeks this means we only have Vegemite as a spread or only have Oats for breakfast but so be it. I won’t pay full price for something I know can be reduced to 30%-50% off.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Eat seasonally. It’s the most cost effective way to shop for produce. Stick to no more than $3.50/kg for fruit, $1.50/kg for potatoes/pumpkins and $5-$6/kg for broccoli/zucchini. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Stop throwing away food, you’re throwing away money! Peel and freeze overripe bananas for baking/smoothies. Do a stir fry with all the veggies in the fridge the day before your next shop. Freeze leftovers for an easy dinner another night. Chop up and freeze veggies for stir frys or to add into mince. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I hope it helps! 💜💜
